3/8/03
Ten Questions With Ann Luhr, Cherry Hill Club.

1.       How did you get started in golf?

My four older sisters started in the Cherry Hill junior golf program in 1972.  I was only 9 so my dad took me to play a few times.  I was especially interested in the golf carts.  He and my mom took me to the CHC range just before the start of the '72 Canadian Open and we hit balls and watched Arnold Palmer hit balls to his caddie. His caddie stood out on the range and caught the shots with a baseball glove.

The following spring my parents bought my first set of clubs at Glen Eagles in Scotland. My dad died unexpectedly that June and the clubs arrived in the mail a few days after he died.

2.       What is your favorite area course and why?

My favorite course is Cherry Hill but there are some several great courses in Buffalo, Rochester, and Ontario.  The best in Buffalo are Country Club of Buffalo, Brookfield, Crag Burn and Park Club. Rochester's best are Country Club of Rochester, Cobblestone Creek, and Locust Hill.

3.       What is your favorite area hole and why?

I don't really have a favorite hole.  I like #18 at Cherry Hill because you can chip in one day
and four putt the next.  I also like #11 at CCB because of the escarpment.

4.       Who is your favorite golf professional (teaching or playing) and why?

Cathy Sherk and Tony Evershed (both now at The Legends) taught me to play when I was a kid and  Ed Pfister helped me when I was about 30.  Jeff Roy (Cherry Hill) has been a friend for more than 20 years and he's been a big help.

5.       What is your favorite/most effective swing thought?

You can get up and down from anywhere if you miss a green in regulation
--as long as you have a short game.

6.       Along the same line, what is your go-to club when everything is on the line?

A flop wedge that's got about 66 degrees of loft.

7.       What is your greatest personal golf memory?

Playing for fun.  I have been able to play with my family in Canada,
Florida, Delaware, Ireland and even Pebble Beach.

8.       What are your three most recent tournament highlights?

Winning the Western NY Championship in 2001 at Locust Hill,
Winning the Buffalo District in 2002 at Cherry Hill, and
winning the Champions Cup in Rochester in 2002.

9.       What is your pre-round warm up routine?

I'm usually running to the tee and I'm lucky to have my shoes tied when I tee off.
It's not a routine I'd recommend.

10.     What is your favorite area practice place?

I don't like to practice but if I do it's at the range at Cherry Hill.
In the winter I hit balls and play putt-putt with the kids at the dome in Tonawanda.

I started swinging a golf club when I was four years old,
but I did not get my own set of clubs until I was eight
.

2.       What is your favorite area course and why?

My favorite course in the area would have to be Crag Burn.
Playing that course from the tips makes for a very adventurous round.

The par 3 6th hole at the Country Club of Buffalo is only one of the prettiest holes in play,

Sergio Garcia would have to be my favorite professional.  He is young and has the risk-taking attitude that makes watching golf that much more exciting.

5.       What is your favorite/most effective swing thought?

The most important swing thought that I always follow is to trust my swing.  If you can't trust your swing, then  how can you be confident with your play ?

6.       Along the same line, what is your go-to club when everything is on the line?

That would definitely have to be the putter.

7.       What is your greatest personal golf memory?

My greatest personal golf memory would be qualifying for the New York State High School championships.  It had been a goal of mine ever since I was a freshman, and when I accomplished it my senior year, it was one of the best times ever.

8.       What are your three most recent tournament highlights?

1.  Winning my first Division 1 NCAA golf tournament (2002 Canisius Fall Invitational).
2.  Qualifying for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championships in Disney World
as a freshman.
3.  Four top-ten tournament finishes as a college freshman (2001-02).

9.       What is your pre-round warm up routine?

I always start off with some stretching to loosen up.  30 minutes on the driving range is next.  The last club I hit on the range is the club I will use on the first tee.  The remaining time is spent chipping and putting on the practice green.

10.     What is your favorite area practice place?

The Batistoni Golf Center is where I enjoy doing most of my practicing.

Ten Questions With Kathy Hunt, Brookfield Country Club and Crag Burn Club.

1.       How did you get started in golf?

My husband played a lot when we met, so I gave it a try.
I almost quit after two summers
of pure frustration.

2.       What is your favorite area course and why?

Crag Burn is my favorite.  The layout and the greens are challenging and beautiful.

3.       What is your favorite area hole and why?

The fourteenth hole at Crag Burn is a beautiful par five that demands an
accurate second shot to set up your third over water to the green.

4.       Who is your favorite golf professional (teaching or playing) and why?

Lonnie Nielsen has been teaching me for several years now.  I try to imitate his smooth, powerful swing.  He has taught me a lot about the qualities of having a good short game.

5.       What is your favorite/most effective swing thought?

I have to think "smooth" and release all other thoughts
so that I don't "think" too much while playing.

6.       Along the same line, what is your go-to club when everything is on the line?

Each situation is different.  I feel comfortable with all my clubs.

7.       What is your greatest personal golf memory?

My greatest memory was playing in the 2001 USGA Women's Mid-Amateur
championship in St. Louis with golf legend Carol Semple Thompson.

8.       What are your three most recent tournament highlights?

1.  Win at 2002 Women's BDGA one-day at Country Club of Buffalo.
2.  Win at 2002 Candy Memorial at Glen Oak Golf Club.
3.  2002 Florida West Coast Women's Championship.

9.       What is your pre-round warm up routine?

For a tournament round, I try to get to the site an hour before play.  I chip and putt
for about 15-20 minutes, and warm up on the range for another 15-20 minutes.
If the putting green seems unusually fast or slow, I spend extra time putting.

10.     What is your favorite area practice place?

Crag Burn has a fantastic practice facility.  It has a two-sided range
to hit shots with or against the wind, a pitching and chipping area
with bunkers and different types of greens, and a large putting green.

Ten Questions With Anthony Baccari, Stafford Country Club.

1.       How did you get started in golf?

I was just out of college, around 1977, and went out
with a few friends from work, on a bet.

2.       What is your favorite area course and why?

I have two.  First in line is my home course, Stafford.  It's an old course
with a great layout.  Second is Crag Burn.  The total golf experience.

3.       What is your favorite area hole and why?

#12 at Glen Oak.  It reminds me of Augusta, without the flowers.

4.       Who is your favorite golf professional (teaching or playing) and why?

Gary Batistoni.  He is a great teacher.  We hit it off together.
You need the right kharma in order to improve to the next level.

5.       What is your favorite/most effective swing thought?

Personally, I went from a hands and arms swinger to a body type release,
where your bigger muscles are used to control the club and swing.

6.       Along the same line, what is your go-to club when everything is on the line?

The driver.  It is fun to hit, and for me, is long and straight.  A good tee shot sets
up the whole game.  If you hit it well, you feel good about your game.

7.       What is your greatest personal golf memory?

I have won some local events, such as the Elkdale Open a few years ago.  The past year (2002), playing well in the BDGA Individual and reaching the quarterfinals of the State Amateur was a big accomplishment.

8.       What are your three most recent tournament highlights?

1.  2002 State Amateur Quarterfinalist (T 5th Place).
2.  2002 BDGA Match Play Runner-Up
3.  2001 & 2002 State Mid-Amateur Championships-survived 36-hole cut.

9.       What is your pre-round warm up routine?

Usually start with 7 iron, progress to 5 iron, 3 iron, then fairway wood, followed by driver.  Finish with plenty of wedges (lob, sand, and gap), then over to the putting green for putting and chipping.  Very important.

10.     What is your favorite area practice place?

If I had only one place to practice, it would be the
Crag Burn practice facility, one of the best around.
